The Gateway to Dunbar

The north end of Dunbar is the first of three distinct shopping areas in the neighbourhood. Between West 16th to West 19th Avenues there are a variety of shops, restaurants and services which attract locals and customers from far and wide.

Domino’s provides the solution for those nights when you are too tired to cook or are looking to feed a hungry mob. In addition to pizza, Domino’s offers chicken wings, chocolate cake and other lunch or dinner choices.

South_Dunbar_Palla_MediaSouth Dunbar is the area along West 41st Avenue and on Dunbar up to West 39th Avenue. The area borders the community of Kerrisdale to the east. Access to south Dunbar is easy by car, bus, bike or by foot. The sidewalks are wide and free street parking is available. Many local residents can be seen walking their dogs, having breakfast, heading to an appointment and window-shopping.

IGA MarketPlace is the anchor of south Dunbar. Many Westside residents enjoy the full service bakery, selection of organic foods, fresh flowers, deli and meat department, produce and bistro/coffee shop. IGA has plenty of customer parking. They offer free delivery for seniors on Tuesdays with a minimum $35 order. IGA is a huge supporter of the Dunbar Village Business Association.

There are two gas stations with convenience stores. Shell is located on the corner of Dunbar Street and West 41st Avenue, and Chevron is on the corner of West 39th Avenue.

Polo Tournament at Southlands Riding Club

One of the world’s most exciting spectator sports returns to Vancouver when the Southlands Riding Club hosts the first polo tournament to be played in Vancouver for over 20 years on 17 August 2014. Teams will be made up of different level handicap players from around BC.

PoloGirlsHorsesThe oldest team sport in the world, polo is a perfect mix of style and excitement with the spectacular field action complemented by cool sideline picnics. While there will be limited food available on site, spectators are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunch and blanket.

It’s a perfect family day out or a special occasion for couples or friends. A limited number of VIP tickets will be available with covered seating and catered high tea luncheon as well as a glass of sparkling wine for the traditional half-time divot stomp.

Polo has been played in Vancouver since 1913 and in the 1960s the Southlands Riding Club was actually the Southlands Riding and Polo Club, with games played on Sundays for a small admission fee. Southlands Riding Club celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2013 and is home to several hundred members enjoying a wide array of equestrian disciplines at all levels from novice to Grand Prix.

The gates open at 12.30 for the game starting throw in at 2pm. Fancy dress is appropriate and a best-dressed awards will be given to the lady, man, couple, child, dog and picnic setup that most catches the judges’ eye.

Admission is $5 and entrance is free for kids aged 14 and under. Limited VIP tickets are on sale for $50 and can be purchased by calling 604-263-4817.

The heart of Vancouver’s equestrian community, Southlands Riding Club can be found at 7025 Macdonald Street, just a 20-minute drive from downtown.
